This Prison Cafeteria Is The Coolest Place To Dine At This Week

Especially for Orange Is The New Black fans

Have you ever wondered what jail food tastes like? Specifically, the brown, mushy grub that gets served in the Netflix hit Orange Is The New Black? Well, lucky for you masochists, Netflix is transforming OverEasy into the Litchfield Penitentiary cafeteria for a two-night-only pop-up event this Thursday and Friday, to promote the show’s Season Four premiere on 17 June.

Experience what it’s like for your favourite onscreen inmates as you’re doled out food resembling the unidentifiable lumps that Piper and company have to chow down in the show. The menu, designed by chef Bjorn Shen of Artichoke and Bird Bird, includes Nutraloaf, a prison meal considered so vile (imagine a three-course meal blended together into a paste and baked into a loaf, yuck) that it was removed from the menus at New York State prisons.

Thankfully, Shen isn’t seriously out to torture us. “Of course, since this is not a real prison, I’ve made the dish look and feel like a Nutraloaf, but taste much better,” shares the chef. “Mine’s made of mushrooms, cheddar, quinoa, pumpkin and nori. Come and get it!”

We hear that the food will be served on plastic trays, minus utensils (to prevent prison fights, duh). You can also forget about a wine list. Instead, expect “a tall plastic cup of our refreshing house beverage: water”. Prison wardens will be on duty to watch out for suspicious activity at all times - consider this your warning.

Due to overwhelming response, reservations are no longer accepted but limited walk-ins are still available. The pop-up event is happening at OverEasy (Liat Towers) on 16 and 17 June, from 12pm to 2pm and 7pm to 10pm.
