This Is How Much Sex You Need To Be Happy

Explained by science

Singapore has always gotten a bad rep in the sex department, given our relatively low birth rate, career-first mentality, and the fact that we’re still a quite conservative nation.

A 2003 survey by Durex (of course) and another by pharmaceutical company Pfizer in 2011 found that people in Singapore have sex at an average of five times a month, or around once a week.

In addition, a survey conducted by the Society of Men’s Health Singapore (SMHS) found that seven out of 10 women in Singapore want to have more sex. We have also consistently come in last in terms of the amount of sex we have compared to our neighbours in the region.

Many Singaporeans attribute it to work and living at home in a small flat with family — and we have to agree, because who wants to bump uglies when your kids or parents are in the next room?

But is having sex once a week really such a bad thing? Previous studies, articles and the media have perpetuated the belief that more sex will lead to more happiness.

A new study, titled Sexual Frequency Predicts Greater Well-Being, But More Is Not Always Better, begs to differ.

Conducted at the University of Toronto, the sex lives of 30, 645 participants, both single and in a relationship, were examined and collected over four decades. It found that while having sex once a week does improve your well-being, anything more than that has no added effect.

“Although more frequent sex is associated with greater happiness, this link was no longer significant at a frequency of more than once a week," said lead researcher Amy Muise in an article published on science and research site Science Daily.

"Our findings suggest that it's important to maintain an intimate connection with your partner, but you don't need to have sex everyday as long as you're maintaining that connection.”

So good news, seems like we’re not unsexy after all, just merely efficient…even when it comes to sex.
