Perfect Birthday Gifts For Different People In Your Life

From your acquaintances to your lover

It’s hard to be a great gift-giver. There are just so many things to fret about, from your budget to whether the receiver would even want the gift.

As fellow gift-giving worriers, we thought we’d put together present ideas we know will work for the different people in your life — be they co-workers or your significant others. Keep reading for some inspiration now!

1. Co-worker

Spending over 10 hours a day, five days a week with our co-workers won’t guarantee close office friendships. How do you get a gift for someone you’re cordial with but not particularly close to? Stationary like beautifully-designed notebooks and funky tech items that will spice up ordinary office life are a safe bet.

2. Old schoolmate

You were once joined at the hip, but things change and people grow up, so what can you get for an old schoolmate you’re meeting for the first time in years? A simple gift, like tea leaf blends and aromatherapy candles or diffusers, are general enough to please anyone and still show you care.

3. BFF

You’d know better what your BFF would want for their big day, but if you really can’t think of anything, there’s nothing quite as awesome as the gift of a shopping voucher or two. Gift cards and vouchers may seem thoughtless, but sometimes the best gift is the freedom to spend on whatever you want — be it books, makeup or clothes. Pair the vouchers with a long, handwritten card about how much you appreciate your bestie and you’re good to go.

4. Niece/ Nephew/ Friend’s kid

Children are probably the hardest to shop for, because you’ve got to get a gift that will make both the child and their parents happy. To strike the perfect balance, get a fun yet educational children’s book, toy or CD. If you’re not sure where to start, the most popular children’s toys and games at the moment are ones that introduce kids to the fundamentals of programming and coding.

5. Parents / Grandparents

What do you give the people who’ve given you everything? Instead of material goods, show your parents and grandparents you love them by whipping up a delicious home-cooked meal, or gather the family for dinner at your ’rents favourite restaurant. Top it all off with a sweet, appreciative card — trust us, Typical Asian Parents will be pleasantly surprised by the overt show of affection.

6. Your significant other

In theory, getting a gift for the one you love and understand the most shouldn’t be difficult — but it is. Thankfully, there’s no better gift for a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife than…you. Take the day to make your other half feel special and loved, with a trip to a nearby island or an entire day out playing Pokemon Go, even if you don’t play it yourself.
