How To Get 10 More Minutes Of Sleep In The Morning

Waking up in the morning is hard - first, there’s the whole business of getting your body physically out of bed, then you have to wash up, put on clothes and have breakfast...all while half-asleep.

But what if we told you there was a way to make your mornings easier and slip in an extra 10 minutes of snooze time? No kidding - here are four life hacks will help you get ready faster, so you won’t be late for work nor miss out on sleep.

1. Get an army-worthy alarm clock

If you’re the type to hit snooze every five minutes for an hour, regular alarm clocks are not for you. Try a more brutal system, like this dumbbell clock that only stops ringing after 30 weight-lifts, or this one, aptly named Sonic Bomb, that is as loud as a jackhammer and violently vibrates your bed till you wake up (sorry, neighbours).

For those who use their phone to tell the time, download Alarmy. This app will prompt you to take a photo around your house when setting your alarm, then when it rings in the morning, you can only shut it up by taking the exact same photo from the same spot. Evil but ingenious.

2. Plan your outfits in advance

If you’re anything like us, you spend most of your morning routine picking out the right outfit for the day (so hard, since we can never ever find anything to wear). Planning ahead will take some getting used to at first, but will definitely solve this problem in the long run.

You could go crazy and create your own cataloging system, but a much easier way to go about this is to download a wardrobe app like Style Book. It allows you to snap pictures of your clothes and organise them neatly, so you can clearly see everything you have. It also lets you put together looks ahead of time — think something like lookbook creator Polyvore, but with clothes you actually have. Other cool functions include a size tracker (very useful when shopping) and a calendar that will ensure you’ll never repeat an outfit again!

3. Streamline your beauty routine

Unless you’re willing to wake up at least 2 hours before you head out the door, you won’t be able to put on a full face of makeup and get your hair done in time. Save precious minutes by keeping your beauty routine as simple as possible: Stick to your go-to cleanser, toner and moisturiser, and invest in multifunctional makeup.

A basic guide on what to have: CC cream, a cheek-and-lip tint and matte brown eyeshadow that you can also use as brow powder. Bonus - you’ll save not just time but money.

4. Prep breakfast the night before

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but how many of us actually have time to sit down and enjoy it? Sneak in a few minutes to eat by cutting out the time taken to make it.

Dishes like overnight oats and chia pudding are great, not just because they’re healthy, but because they can be made the night before. Smoothies are also an easy no-cook breakfast food — just cut up your favourite fruits into chunks during the weekend, freeze them and blend them into delicious, healthy slushies on weekday mornings.
