Locally-based English actor-host George Young is finally off the market after exchanging rings with Taiwanese-American Janet Hsieh on 20 January. The lanky model-host may be an unfamiliar face to those without cable TV, but she has a long list of hosting accolades, most notably, being the face of Discovery Travel and Living’s Fun in Taiwan. Here’s everything you need to know about the brainy and incredibly talented Janet Hsieh.
1. She’s really smart
She graduated from one of the world’s top universities, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a double major in Biology and Spanish. Which brings us to…
2. She’s a polyglot
She is fluent in five languages: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien.
3. She’s a trained sushi chef
Hsieh worked as a waitress at a Japanese restaurant in Santa Barbara, California, and had the chef there teach her how to make sushi.
4. She can kick ass
Really, she can. Hsieh has a black belt in tae kwon do.
5. She’s a violinist
She’s been playing the violin since she was five and has performed for George H.W. Bush at the White House.
6. She is also a trained circus clown
We’re not kidding — Hsieh was a circus clown trainee for six months in Bueno Aires, Argentina, juggling and doing flips. Why? The answer is, why not?
7. She was going to be a doctor
Hsieh received certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in Boston, USA and completed a six-month medical residency in Taiwan, before she decided working in a medicine was not for her.
8. She’s an author
There are a total of five books under Hsieh’s belt, including a dictionary of Internet vocabulary titled J@net’s e-nglish.com.
