ELLE Power Player: Velda Tan

This social media star has got fashion in her blood

In a new world where one’s fashion clout is measured by online presence and the size of her Instagram following, Velda Tan is a forerunner. Pretty much everyone knows by now that she is one of the three women (including her sister, Viola, and good friend Rachel Lim) behind fashion e-tailer Love, Bonito — one of Singapore’s most successful fashion businesses.

Tan has since gone on to further prove her savvy with other ventures — Pince & Pints, the lobster roll restaurant she started with her husband Frederick Yap — and Collate The Label, a spanking-new mid-market fashion brand that debuted barely months ago at Singapore Fashion Week — both of which have been very well-received.

At 27, Tan has achieved what most people twice her age had probably only dreamt of. What does she make of her success? “I’ve the inclination for the path less travelled — I left university halfway to grow my first business. Fortune favours the brave; it takes courage to leave what is comfortable behind and pursue a life-changing purpose that lies beyond the borders,” she says.

Come 2016, she hopes to present Collate overseas. “And yes, my husband and I do want to start a family before we turn 30,” she adds. To enterprising women out there, she’d like to say: “Just do it! I’ve heard so many women musing over what they could and should have done, and how their best years are behind them. That is far from the truth; I believe in making the best use of what we’ve been given now. Waking up every day with a sense of purpose, and being able to do what I love, makes me feel powerful.”
