ELLE Power Player: Beatrice Chia-Richmond

When it comes to her productions, we are all eyes and ears

A go-to person when it comes to helming national-scale events, Beatrice Chia-Richmond, 41, has come a long way since her R(A) directorial debut, Shopping and F**king, won her the Best Director title in the 2003 Life! Theatre Awards. She went on to direct over 40 productions in 10 years, before raising her game — and going even bigger.

The statuesque director/producer is the first female creative director of a National Day Parade, and most recently, the creative director for the 28th SEA Games. Widely regarded as a spectacular visual feast, it was seen by some 998,000 viewers via “live” high-definition TV broadcast on MediaCorp channels.

“[It is] my proudest achievement for 2015,” she says, adding that almost two years of her life were poured into the mega-project. “It has been my most challenging directorial work by far, the most mentally and psychologically exhausting, yet the most rewarding experience,” she smiles.

Keeping this married mum of an eight-year-old busy is also her role as creative director of concert promotion company Running into the Sun, which produced SMTOWN Live World Tour III, one of the biggest concerts ever to be held in Singapore with an audience of 26,000. But she’s not complaining. “Being able to wake up every day and do what I love makes me feel powerful, especially if it’s with good friends,” she says.
