Buy Art Like A Pro

Looking to collect art but have no idea where to begin? Affordable Art Fair Singapore 2015’s fair director, Alan Koh gives us 5 tips

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to go through art school to appreciate art. If you’re thinking of taking your love for art to the next level and actually bring one home, here are five tips that will help you through the tricky process of picking a piece, whether you’re a novice or an artist yourself.

1. Discover the mediums

“Learn as much as you can about the different art mediums — painting, sculptures, photography, etc, to develop your own preferences. There will be a series of talks and workshops, especially for new collectors. They are informal, interactive and a great way to learn the basics.”

2. Always ask questions

“If you find something you particularly like, ask questions! The best way to find out more about an artist or a specific work is to chat with the gallerist. They’re very knowledgeable and more than happy to help you understand the finer points of art and collecting. Signing up for mailing lists is a sure way to keep up-to-date with the latest goings on in the art world.”

3. Don’t rush things

“Choosing art should not be like speed dating. Once you’ve had a good look around, take a break and think about the pieces that you like. Then return to your favourite pieces with fresh eyes.”

4. Sometimes just go for it

“There are very few chances to buy original artwork, so if you really love something within your budget, just go for it!”

5. Trust your instincts

“Remember, you are buying art for your own enjoyment — the only opinion that matters is your own. Trust your taste and go for pieces you will take pleasure in viewing day in and out.”
