3 Ways To Celebrate Wildlife Awareness Day

Who says conservation can’t be fun?

If you love the outdoors, you have even more reason to celebrate all Mother Nature’s creatures today - Wildlife Awareness Day.

The United Nations-declared initiative started in 2013 and aims to protect wildlife (both animal and plant species) and raise awareness about the devastating effects of global warming, poaching and illegal trade (RIP, Cecil the Lion).

Here are some ways to be a part of the meaningful effort.

1. Start reading and reacting

It’s never too late to understand what’s going on out there and to play a part. Subscribe to newsletters and magazines about wildlife conservation, attend pro-wildlife events or be part of the efforts of local groups such as Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) and Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS).

2. Get involved

Play Mommy for a few hours by volunteering at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) when you sign up here. Or sponsor a bird or an animal at Jurong Bird Park or the Singapore Zoological Gardens here. All you have to do is make an annual contribution for its care and maintenance. Birds and bees more your thing? Find out how you can support the efforts of The Nature Society (NSS) here.

3. Experience to appreciate

The perfect way to really feel this cause is to get up close with it. To drive awareness of wildlife conservation, five holiday-themed projects have been set up to support endangered animals against stunning backdrops. These include Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo, Malaysia and Chengdu Panda Base in Chengdu, China. At these destinations, you can explore the natural environments, feed the animals and learn about conservation efforts. Click here for flight travel deals.
