Why The Queen Mother Left More Money To Prince Harry Than Prince William

The royal reportedly put a substantial amount of her fortune into a trust fund for her great grandchildren.

The royal family are worth millions of pounds, with a large portion of their private wealth coming from inheritance. For Prince William and Prince Harry, much of this has come from their late mother, Princess Diana, who reportedly left them each a sum of $17.5 million to be handed over when they turned 30.

The Queen Mother also left a substantial amount of her fortune to her great-grandchildren. Following her death in 2002, the BBC reported that she had put two-thirds of her money into a trust fund for her great-grandsons eight years earlier.

It was estimated at the time that the princes would share about $25 million from the estate of their late great-grandmother. However, Harry was said to have received a greater share of this than his older brother, and there's a considerate reason why.

Instead of personal preference, it's thought that the Queen Mother's decision was down to the line of succession and the financial impact this will have on the princes in the future.

As second-in-line to the throne, William will "benefit financially by becoming king", the BBC noted, although William's financial situation will change when his father, Prince Charles, inherits the crown.

William is in-line to become the next Prince of Wales, and as The Express points out, this means he will take over the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate which consists of 53,000 hectares of land and funds the public, charitable and private activities of the Prince of Wales.

So, by looking ahead, it's likely the Queen Mother was compensating for the fact that William will receive a significant financial benefit in comparison to his brother.

The Queen Mother had an estimated $123 million fortune, which included works of art, a valuable Fabergé egg collection and jewellery. It was announced in 2002 that she left her entire estate (her personal assets) to the Queen, who has given much of her late mother's treasured artwork to the Royal Collection, which is displayed around many of the royal residences.
