Why Prince Harry's Facial Hair May Affect Whether He Wears Military Uniform On Royal Wedding Day

Will he shave off his bushy beard for his wedding this weekend?

While the world continues to speculate on what Meghan Markle's lavish wedding dress will look like and who might be designing it, Prince Harry is likely to wear his Household Cavalry uniform for his wedding.

But only on one condition.... He shaves off his current bushy beard.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers claims the army does not permit or approve of a beard, although the 33-year-old royal has previously worn his Blues and Royals uniform complete with facial hair.

'He's not able to wear his Royal Horse Guards uniform with a beard,' Vickers told Press Association.

'He does it sometimes but they don't like it. That's why when he took the parade at Sandhurst, he wore a suit.'

As a rule, the British Army doesn't allow beards.

However, Harry also sported a beard when he wore a military dress coat at the Cenotaph last November, which reportedly prompted criticism from some quarters.

Although Pioneer Sergeants are the only rank allowed to have a beard, Harry is no longer a serving officer and therefore military rules may not apply to him.

Experts have been predicting that Harry is most likely to wear the uniform of Captain General Royal Marines, which was a role given to him by the Queen in December.

While Harry is believed to hold an affection for his old regiment, after serving in the army for a decade, former guards and cavalry officers wearing their uniforms at their wedding is regarded as 'a bit naff' in their social circles (via The Times).

Meanwhile, Royal correspondent Penny Junor told ELLE UK: 'My hunch is Harry will wear morning dress because it is going to be relatively low-key, compared with his brother's wedding, and he is no longer a serving officer.

'If he wore the uniform it would make the whole thing much more formal and he is essentially a very informal sort of guy.'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on 19 May.
