In the wee hours of this morning, the Croatian football team resoundingly defeated the English football team in extra time to advance to the World Cup finals for the first time in history. On behalf of everyone who's had it up to here with all the obnoxious "football is coming home" nonsense that English fans have been crowing about the last two weeks: THANK YOU, CROATIA.
Now, we could spend all day talking about the utter sham that is Harry Kane (most likely) winning the Golden Boot because of his stat-padding against Panama, but we won't (we really could, though).
Instead, let's celebrate the 4.1 million-strong sporting nation who has defied the (inexplicably low) expectations of football pundits by shining the spotlight on its beauty. The tiny country may have often been overlooked by tourists for its more glamorous European cousins like Italy and Greece, but its dazzling coastline, stunning ancient walled towns and picturesque forests and lakes deserve much more attention - and rightly so. Sure, Zagreb and Dubrovnik are fast becoming popular tourist destinations, but there will always be new nooks and crannies to explore.
Behold, your next must-go destinations for the next European holiday.
