The story behind Kate Middleton’s Ballon Bleu de Cartier watch

The key accessory in many of her royal appearances is a sentimental gift.

It’s pretty much the only watch that she’s ever been seen wearing at public appearances — with the very first of them being a visit to one of her charities, The Art Room, in February 2014. While not as attention-grabbing as her sapphire engagement ring, the watch has also invited much scrutiny, since everything the Duchess wears is bound to sell out very quickly.

But did you know how Kate Middleton came to own this classic timepiece (the Ballon Bleu de Cartier)?

After presenting his wife with the famous sapphire engagement ring, it seems that Prince William went on a theme for the precious items he subsequently gave her as gifts. Some time around their wedding, he gave Kate a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings, which used to belong to his mother and matched the engagement ring.

Then, on their third wedding anniversary in 2014, William gave her the Ballon Bleu watch, which has a blue spinel set into its crown — now, can you see the similarity across all three gifts? On the couple’s tour of Australia and New Zealand that year in April, the Duchess was seen wearing it every day of their journey and she continued to wear it for many, many events ever since.

There’s no surprise that William chose to shop at Cartier, since the brand is beloved by royals over the years. Kate and Pippa Middleton both wear a Ballon Bleu de Cartier (you can snag one for S$6,300 onwards), while Meghan Markle and Princess Diana have been seen with Cartier's Tank. Scroll down to see them in their Cartier pieces.
