The engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made headlines across the world, with royalists and Suits fans alike seeking out one thing in particular: A shot of the engagement ring. The ring Prince Harry designed for Markle featured a diamond from Botswana (where they first holidayed) and two smaller diamonds taken directly from Princess Diana's personal collection.
Images of the ring went viral, and the design has now been documented as an engagement ring trend for this year—following in the footsteps of the popularity of Kate Middleton's engagement ring from Prince William.
However, as Meghan Markle has been married before, we couldn't help but want to see how the two rocks compared.
Markle wed Trevor Engelson in 2011, after he proposed to her with a simple, but elegant diamond ring. Once married, she added a thin diamond wedding band, making for quite the sparkly pair.
The presence of diamonds is certainly a similarity, but the history and personal touches that Prince Harry added to his fiancée's engagement ring is what makes this design so special.
But as for the wedding band: Will Prince Harry follow suit and pick out a matching band for his bride? Basing off the metals used in Markle's engagement ring, a gold or diamond band would fit in well alongside the ring Prince Harry proposed with.
However, Prince William and Kate Middleton opted for a contrasting wedding band to the Duchess' iconic sapphire engagement ring. Rather than matching the white gold engagement band with a white gold wedding band, the pair opted for a Welsh yellow gold.
After their royal wedding, Clarence House confirmed that Queen Elizabeth gave her grandson the Welsh gold shortly after her announced his engagement to Kate Middleton, meaning the ring has some historical prominence. Prince Harry may opt to do something similar, following suit with a Welsh gold band, and taking jewellery advice from his grandmother, the Queen.
