The Sleeves Of Now Aren’t For The Faint-Hearted

Let’s just say the latest fashion trend is pretty BIG

God is in the details. In other words, just as designers embellish collars or hems, they have tricks up their sleeves too - for, well, crafting the perfect sleeve.

This season, sleeves took a dramatic turn, with oversized funnel cuts appearing everywhere from on a classic white shirt at Michael Kors Collection, to a printed kaftan at Dolce & Gabbana.

Then there were the girlish, babydoll-style voluminous sleeves at Miu Miu, Erdem and Alexander McQueen, all of which conjured a potent mix of Victoriana, the New Romantics and frou-frou prairie styles.

Balloon and bouffant sleeves championed fashion’s passion for voluminous shapes at JW Anderson and Lanvin. The latter label showed dressy yet simple white shirts - think minimal seams, hidden button stands and starched collars and cuffs. Paired with dark bottoms, the ensembles echoed a chaste elegance underscored with just the right amount of evening drama via the shirts’ roomy bishop sleeves.

Sculptural ruffles were ingenious touches, giving fanciful sleeves a sense of newness. At Valentino, feather-trimmed armholes mimicked capped sleeves while clever drapery at Marni gave asymmetric sleeves a new vibe.

Truly, this season presents a chance to wear your art on your sleeve. For inspiration, check out the gallery above.
