If there’s one thing to take away from the Spring/Summer 2016 fashion shows, it’s that it’s now totally okay (and actually encouraged) to wear your inner garments on the outside. One piece in particular that was beloved by designers all over? The humble slip dress.
When it was introduced in the 1920s, the slip was traditionally worn under frocks to prevent creases. It faded out in the ’60s, only return in the ’90s as a full-blown dress sent down the runways of Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, and worn by grunge-rock chicks like Courtney Love. And we can all say hello to it again this season: The slip dress was spotted everywhere, from Givenchy to Burberry and Calvin Klein.
Now, besides the fact that wearing a sultry wisp of material looks and feels super sexy, here’s another practical reason to jump on this trend bandwagon — slip dresses were practically made for our warm and humid weather.
There are so many ways to wear one, too. You can throw it on as it is, wear it over pants as a take on the long-over-long trend or layer a white t-shirt under it, along with a pair of combat boots for a total ’90s throwback. One dress, many possibilities.
