Hermès Bags Galore!

And other reasons why you need to head to the brand’s Leather Forever exhibition

If you have more leather bags and accessories in your closet than you can count, this is the one exhibition you need to head to. Yes, even if you don’t appreciate art.

The Hermès Leather Forever showcase - which celebrates the fashion house’s longstanding relationship with the luxe material since it was founded in 1837 - is finally making its way to our shores.

Between 25 October and 13 December, you can amble through the brand’s fascinating heritage via two special showcases at the Asian Civilisations Museum and the ArtScience Museum

Start your journey at the Little Room Of Wanders at the Asian Civilisations Museum, which serves as a prelude to the main exhibition at the ArtScience Museum and is also an ode to Singapore’s 50th year of independence. Here, you can view a collection of objects from the Emile Hermès museum in Paris, such as paintings, ingenious mechanisms and unusual knick-knacks that serve as permanent inspiration to the house’s designers.

Then take a stroll to the ArtScience Museum to the event proper, which will feature more than 200 Hermès creations, including its iconic Birkin and Kelly bags. Even better, the travelling exhibition, which began in London in 2012 to mark Hermès’ 175th anniversary, will bring along with it artisans from its Paris workshops, who will demonstrate on-site the art of leather-working and how its bags are brought to life.

“This is a very exciting moment for Hermès in Singapore,” says artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas. “With this ambitious project, visitors will simultaneously have the chance to discover the rich and poetic expression of Hermès’ core métier and peruse some of the treasures assembled by my great-grandfather Émile Hermès in his long life of collecting. I am happy and proud, in the name of Hermès, to share it with Singapore.”

FYI, collectors: To celebrate the exhibition and mark each decade of Singapore’s independence, the brand has created five Kellydoll bags.

The Hermès Leather Forever exhibition will be held from 25 October to 13 December at the ArtScience Museum, from 10am-7pm Saturday to Thursday and from 10am-9pm on Friday. Admission is free.
