It was a glorious location to begin with (ola, Rio!), but Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2017 presentation blew it out of the park with a spectacular show venue, a hip squad of #LVGirls including Alicia Vikander, Liu Wen and Doona Bae – and most of all, an electrifying athleisure-meets-modernist collection that teamed up with a pulsating soundtrack by French krautrock band La Femme to mesmerise the crowd.
Artistic director Nicolas Ghesquiere sent out new-age warrior princesses in forward-looking pieces with fluid, postmodern lines, including dresses that featured ruffles yet resembled armour, and rubber-heeled sandals he dubbed “tech-thongs” that fell somewhere in between sporty and swashbuckling (and looked gloriously comfortable).
Samba-ing throughout all that futurism was also a rich Brazilian theme – this, after all, is the collection Ghesquiere first dreamed up when he visited Rio last November. A tongue-in-cheek print of football players tackling the LV clasp on the brand’s iconic Twist bag; the Petite Malle reimagined as a boombox in reference to the significance of music and movement in Brazil – all came daubed in the vivacious colours and lighthearted spirit the Land of the Palms is famous for.
“In Rio de Janeiro, what I saw most of all was movement and an explosive energy that lives somewhere between modernism and tropicality,” the designer said. “I was fascinated by the constant duality between nature and urbanism and the pictorial explosion it creates.
“For me, the main question was how to incorporate into my collection all these elements that are part of Brazilian culture, without forgetting that I am just a visitor who brings his own Parisian and French cultural references to the moment.”
Did he succeed? When Ghesquiere came down the bold, scarlet curves of the Niteroi museum runway at the end of the show, the applause wasn’t as roaring as it could have been. But not because of a lack of enthusiasm – everyone was simply too busy snapping photos of the brilliant designer against that stunning backdrop.
