Hello everyone, it’s Nellie Lim (a.k.a. social media influencer @nellielim on Instagram) and I’ve teamed up with ELLE Singapore once again for more Fashion Week fun!
You might remember me from my columns on Seoul Fashion Week a couple of months back. Well, now I’m in Sydney for the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. This time, besides coverage on the hottest runway trends, I’ll also be taking you along with me and giving you an inside look at what it’s like to be a part of the southern hemisphere’s biggest fashion event.
I attend several Fashion Weeks a year, and one question I’m constantly asked is: “How do you make sure you always look great?”
When you look at fashion show photographs and street-style snaps, the glitz and glamour seems effortless, but it actually takes a lot of work to look on point 24/7 - and for an entire week, at that!
You’ll find yourself trekking around for different shows and fittings, and if it’s an overseas fashion week, it’s especially difficult to ensure that you have everything you need to match your outfit to your hair, makeup, shoes etc. I usually take an entire week to plan my outfits and still find myself changing my mind right before the shows.
For what it’s worth though, here’s my take on how to rock Fashion Week, fashion-wise!
First, get your game face on, because fashion is nothing without makeup. Personally, I only bring the essentials for my face and eyes (like foundation, mascara, etc) and go crazy on lip products instead. This way, I can vary my lippie according to my outfits.
I often get fitted for clothing to attend fashion shows, and designers tend to send new outfits right before their events. So by focusing on the lips, I can easily switch up my lip colour according to the different outfits I’m wearing during the day.
Once you’re set beauty-wise, you’ve got to start planning your outfits! Make that task easier by unpacking everything from your suitcase and having it all hung up neatly and clearly. Here’s a tip: I usually request a clothing rack from my hotel so that I get extra hanging space.
After planning your outfits, you need to start matching your looks with the right shoes. I usually pack way more pairs than I need, but a girl can never have too many shoes, right?! Okay, I’m kidding, but seriously, it’s always good to over-pack when it comes to shoes so that you have more options for different looks.
The last step: Accessories (check out #NelliesArmCandy on Instagram)! A bit of swag can totally make an outfit, so bring as many options as you need.
So there you have it! That’s my take on how to look on point during Fashion Week. Stay tuned for more Fashion Week content over the next few days!
