It’s been said many times, many ways: France is fashion’s capital, and for so many reasons. Not only is it home to the most-lauded brands on earth, it’s also produced some of the globe’s best designers and a cherry crop of fashion muses and It Girls.
But what is it about French style that makes it so covetable? For one, it’s about as timeless as you can get (just look at the number of stories online on the fashion mistakes French women never make!).
It’s also the perfect balance of coquettish and elegant, masculine and feminine, simplicity and sophistication – and above all, it always looks effortless.
Yet, if you aren’t French, looking as put-together as a Parisian can be surprisingly difficult, because there’s actually a specific art to dressing that way. Just ask Ines de la Fressange. The fashion muse to some of the world’s leading fashion designers recently completed her fifth collaboration with UNIQLO (launching today!), which is divided into three specific lines – Le Sport, Voyage and Uniforme – and has a tight colour palette of classic shades.
The Le Sport range features refreshingly chic and sporty separates like polo shirts, V-necked sweaters and linen relaxed pants in that uber French combination of navy blue and white, while the Voyage one features feminine lines with an adventurous edge. Think safari style but without the stiff khakis – all the fabrics in this range were specially developed to “complement soft, feminine skin”.
The line that perhaps speaks most of Ines herself, however, is Uniforme, which was designed around the fashion muse’s love of jackets. UNIQLO design director Naoki Takizawa devoted particular attention to this collection, the results of which include a clever casual yet chic jacket in seersucker material. We love!
Says Ines, “These items are good for the city and the weekend. Naoki managed to find exactly the kind of fabrics I was looking for: Linens and cottons that I know from vintage French clothes of the 19th century in France. Even wrinkled, these clothes are beautiful…and actually I prefer them that way!”
Above, ELLE fashion stylist Gracia Phang shows you how to incorporate the latest UNIQLO x Ines de la Fressange pieces into your wardrobe for some truly French style – yes, macarons totes included.
The UNIQLO x Ines de la Fressange Spring/Summer 2016 collection will be available at UNIQLO Suntec City and online from today.
