7 celebs who look spectacular in glasses

These sight-impaired celebs know how to rock a pair of glasses, even at glam dos.

When Oprah Winfrey gave her much-lauded speech after being honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, her most outstanding accessory was a pair of bold, black cat-eye glasses that helped to frame the momentous occasion. She is just one of many female celebs, young and older, who have embraced their short-sightedness and worked their glasses into their style, even donning them to grace the red carpet and the podium.

What does this mean for the myopic many (especially in Singapore which has the highest rate of myopia in the world)? Don’t ditch your glasses just because you need to glam up. Instead, get a pair that perfectly fits your face, personality and style. Better still, get more than one for different occasions — a regular one for work and an evening one for dressier events.

Take your cue from these four-eyed celebs who are taking geek-chic to a new level.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah has an admirable collection of glasses in various colours and designs (cat-eye, tortoiseshell, bejewelled), which she matches with her outfits for different occasions. The media mogul certainly knows how to work a pair of glasses — not only did she inspire with her passionate speech at Golden Globes, she also made a powerful fashion statement with her cat-eye frames.

Dakota Fanning

The 23-year-old actress is regularly seen rocking the cute librarian look. She took the look to the podium at the ELLE Women of Hollywood Awards in 2016 when she added an interesting twist to her elegant dress by putting on a pair of clear reading glasses onstage — her only accessory that night. The effect? Her retro-looking pair of Lucite frames added a hipster edge to her pale yellow dress with its plunging neckline. Cute, chic, elegant — all rolled into one.

Kate Winslet

The Oscar winner is known for being smart, witty and confident. She showcased this confidence at the Oscars in 2016 when she wore a pair of large thick-rimmed eyeglasses with her metallic black Ralph Lauren gown while presenting the Best Picture award alongside Reese Witherspoon. While the Internet was divided on Winslet’s geek-chic glamour (negative opinions were mostly about the size of the glasses and the fact that they appeared askew), we think she deserves credit for making a bold fashion statement at the most glamorous event in Hollywood.

Lupita Nyong’o

Ever-fashionable Lupita Nyong’o looks stunning in everything she wears, even a pair of black, thick-framed glasses she wore to the Golden Globes in 2015, which she paired with a lilac gown. In fact, the glasses were such a hit that they inspired their own Twitter account — @LupitaGlasses. Nyong’o then stepped out onstage again in black frames at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2015, this time beautifully complementing a colourful Elie Saab gown with a plunging neckline.

Jennifer Aniston

The Friends star is often seen out and about with a pair of chic glasses. But the Golden Globe winner took it one step further when she wore a sleek pair of retro, thin-rimmed glasses to the Critics’ Choice Awards in 2016. The result? Sexy and glamorous, especially with her powder-blue gown with a thigh-high slit.

Anne Hathaway

This Oscar winner has proven her versatility in both acting and fashion — she pulls off different looks with ease and does geeky-chic especially well. The Devil Wears Prada star is often seen in thick framed glasses when she’s out, and she’s also nailed the dorky-glam look at premieres. So much so that she has been appointed the ambassador of eyewear brand Bolon and is seen in the brand’s advertisements.

Tina Fey

The comedienne is rarely seen without her glasses so it seemed only natural for her to wear her signature thick frames onstage at the Emmys 2015. Her black frames added a touch of intellectual sophistication to her black and white Antonio Berardi dress. There’s no denying that the funny woman looks great in glasses and she pulls off the dorky-chic look perfectly, whether in jeans or a gown.
