An American In Paris

Tory Burch hosted not one, but two parties to mark the opening of her first store in Paris earlier this week

Colourful American preppie chic finally arrived in Paris’ bustling Rue St Honore, in the heart of the first arrondissement, on 1 July when American designer Tory Burch opened her first store in the City of Lights.

The designer, who launched her label in 2004, flew into Paris earlier this week to host the opening festivities. First up, a cocktail party at the three-storey store, a sprawling, historic space dating back to the 1600s. Celebrities including Jessica Alba, Glee’s Dianna Agron, model Natalia Vodianova and Anna dello Russo sipped on signature cocktails including Burch’s favourite drink, the Southside, and grooved to music from DJ Louise Chen of the all-female music collective Girls Girls Girls.

Then came the main event: A Marrakesh-meets-Chelsea garden party, inspired by Burch’s Fall 2015 collection, in the grounds of The Hotel de Sully in the Marais. Guests noshed on canapes by Fatéma Hal of acclaimed restaurant La Mansouria, while VIPs cosied up in a custom-designed Maharaja tent featuring a textile print from the Fall 2015 runway collection, Berber poufs, pillows, daybeds and carpets. Among the star-studded attendees were designers Giambattista Valli, Olivier Rousteing of Balmain, Bruno Frisoni and J.W. Anderson. Also spotted: Moda Operandi co-founder Lauren Santo Domingo, and concept designers Alex and Sofia Sanchez de Betak. (See all the glitz and glitter here.)

Just before 11pm, hip-hop singer Lauryn Hill took to the stage for an intense, joyous 45-minute show, supported by a horn section, backup trio and DJ Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. As the night deepened, the crowd danced and sang along to her hits, including Ready Or Not, Doo-Wop, Doo-Wop (That Thing) and, of course, the Roberta Flack classic, Killing Me Softly.
