5 Online Shopping Mistakes You Need To Stop Making

The world of online shopping is a wonderful, exhilarating one: A never-ending inventory of apparel, accessories and lifestyle goods, updated in real-time and available 24/7. But when the digits in your bank account start decreasing at an alarming rate and all you have to show for it is a pile of things you don’t need, it’s time for an intervention. Here are five mistakes almost everyone makes while shopping online, and how to fix them.

1. Caving in to free shipping

If all you want is a pair of jeans, don’t put a pair of boots, necklaces and a bag into your cart just to hit the minimum amount for free shipping. You’re really just paying for your shipping with things you don’t need and therefore will eventually not use.

2. Subscribing to e-newsletters

Receiving newsletters or following social media accounts is akin to having little devils perched on your shoulder softly whispering, ‘‘sale’’,  ‘‘new in store’’ and “buy now”. Unsubscribing will keep you out of the loop so you’ll not feel tempted to shop unnecessarily.

3. Buying on impulse

When shopping is as simple as a few clicks on your mouse, impulse shopping can be a problem. To save yourself from needless spending, leave your items in your cart for a week to keep emotional spending at bay. Only check-out if you feel you still need it after that.

4. Giving in to sale season

No one likes to miss out — especially during big sales events like Black Friday or GSS mark-downs. Make a short list of items you need, then keep to it when shopping during the online grab-fest. You’ll feel less of a need to buy just about anything to cash in on a good deal. 

5. Ordering stuff that doesn’t fit - and being too lazy to return it after

Unlike brick-and-mortar shops, you can’t try on or inspect the items you’re buying online. So always check the measurements and dimensions that are provided in the product description — especially for apparel and shoes. Even if you know your size, cut and fit can vastly differ according to the country the item is manufactured in. If the item you’ve ordered isn’t right for you when it arrives, make it a point to return it. There’s no need to kid yourself: Stuff that you think you can eventually somehow make work for you, never really makes it out of your closet.
