Your Menstrual Cycle Should Play A Big Part In Your Beauty Routine

Here's how you can with your flow

It’s a well-known fact that we need to change up our beauty routines as we age, but did you know you should switch it up throughout your menstrual cycle too?

As any girl who’s ever gotten a visit from Aunt Flow would have noticed, our skin tends to be brighter and clearer when we’re ovulating, then drier, oilier, duller and more prone to blemishes the nearer we get to the date of our period.

Like swollen breasts and cranky moods, the condition of our skin is very much affected by the level of hormones in our body.

So what should you do at each stage of your menstrual cycle for the best skin every day?

Pre-ovulation to ovulation

Rejoice, this is usually when your estrogen levels and therefore, skin, are at their peak. Your skin should look plump, hydrated and smooth.

As your skin is less sensitive during this period, this is the best time to try new skincare and makeup products, and go for that facial. Amp up your at-home beauty routine by incorporating masks and massages.

Try: ReFa Carat, $299.

Ah, PMS. Like your emotional state, your skin is likely to be a mess right now. It might feel so much oilier as your body is producing more sebum, which can lead to breakouts.

Use a cleanser with anti-acne ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil to clean out pores, remove excess oil and keep bacteria out. This is also the time where it’s most crucial to keep skin clean and let it breathe, so remove all makeup before you hit the sack.

Try: The Body Shop Super-sized Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash, $29.90.

Your period is finally here! Your skin is not as bad as it was during PMS, but it’s not great either. Your body produces prostaglandins that cause inflammation and bloating, making your skin look lacklustre and puffy.

Opt for products with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients to calm your skin down and bring back its luminosity.
