Did you spend your year-end holiday partying at the new Zouk, wining and dining at your friend’s rooftop, or playing games while finishing the whiskey stash?
Two weeks of excessive drinking, sleep deprivation, lack of hydration and other debauchery is all it takes to leave your face looking like it was dragged across the 365-day time-plane of 2016 and left for dead in 2017. #DamnChuiFace
With another holiday round the corner (Chinese New Year), are you desperately wondering what you can do to get your healthy glow back?
Here are my tips:
The build-up of dead skin cells creates a washed-out and flaky skin texture that gives the impression of tired-looking skin. Scrubbing and its massaging effect will help to perk up your skin and leave it feeling softer and smoother.
After removing your makeup at the end of the day, prep your face by pouring a pea-sized amount of facial wash (and not the controversial brand which uses broken peach kernels that will damage skin) on a high quality face cloth like Muji Indian Organic Cotton Waffle Face Towel, and foam up by rubbing the facial cloth. With the same cloth around your fingers, let it run across your face.
Use this motion to allow the material to physically slough away dead skin cells (keeping this action to under 30 seconds) before washing off.
Or for those who own a Clarisonic, use the Luxe brush head once every night to help physical exfoliation.
2. Boost your skincare routine
Clarins Skin Boosters are 15ml bottles of wonder that can upgrade your regular skincare regime: Booster Detox contains coffee extract that helps to awaken skin (great for daytime), Booster Repair helps to strengthen the skin (great for night-time), and Booster Energy is perfect for those who really need help with fatigued skin (both day and night-time).
Just pick one, according to your concern, and add 3-5 drops into your everyday serum or moisturiser to enjoy the boost.
You can also use ForBelovedOne Mandelic Acid Renewal Toner every other night to increase cell renewal. The chemical action of this product helps to optimise your skin’s absorption of skincare while bringing radiance back to your complexion.
3. Deal with the patchy dryness
Do you have random dry patches on your face due to too much partying? Comfort your skin with these steps (after applying your toner):
- Pour some SKII Facial Treatment Essence onto cotton pads, and leave the soaked cotton pads on affected areas for about five minutes. This will help to plump your skin.
- Massage the excess product into your skin.
- Apply your toner again and follow up with your regular skincare routine.
Those who need a more conditioning step can incorporate ForBelovedOne Advance Anti-aging Ceramid Squalane Serum into their daily care. Apply it after your toner to boost the skin’s hydrating factors before applying the rest of your skincare. Your skin should feel more hydrated in the first day and in a week, skin should feel more supple.
4. Treat skin dryness
If you’ve noticed that the skin on the sides of your face has gotten drier, it probably means that the late nights have taken its toll on you.
Normally, I would suggest applying moisturiser solely on the sides of your face – but if your skin is experiencing increased dryness, it’s time to drench it in moisture. Start by applying moisturiser on the sides of your face before moving onto the oilier, centre portion (most people start applying moisturiser from the centre of the face before moving outwards, which makes the face feel greasier).
If your skin has developed increased sensitivity during this period of light dryness (with an oilier t-zone), you need to switch to a fragrance-free product like Bioderma Sensibio Light Soothing Cream, which is great for our hot weather and yet comforting enough in our humidity.
If your skin is calling out for a slightly denser face cream, Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewal Cream EX will be a great match with its long-wearing moisturising factors, antioxidants and amazing ginseng extract scent that lulls you into a relaxed, pampered sleep.
If you need a moisturiser that helps to hold moisture while stay comforting to skin, IDS Intensive Moisturiser will satisfy your requirement. Their new enHAnce complex increases actives penetration into the skin, maximising hydration but without that heaviness.
Perhaps you would like to change your face and body wash to prevent dryness as well?
First Aid Beauty’s Face Cleanser Daily Treatment with FAB Antioxidant Booster and its Ultra Repair Wash for body are mild enough to clean without stripping the skin’s moisture!
5. Heal flaky lips
Here’s how to treat wine-stained lips, and dry lips from excess smoking and alcohol consumption:
Use a thin layer of Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (which is basically a mid-weight conditioning lip balm) after your night-time skincare routine. Scrape out a generous amount to cover the whole lip right before you go to bed. In the morning, the skin on your lip will feel amazing.
You can also use the Lip Sleeping Mask when you are doing your makeup in the morning - simply blot off the excess with a tissue before applying your lip product to sustain that suppleness.
If your lips are still dry and patchy, avoid putting on lipstick and most of them will just emphasise the flakiness of your lips. Go for a coloured lip balm or a sheer lipstick instead – IT Cosmetics Vitality Lip Flush 4-In-1 Reviver Lipstick Stain in Je Ne Sais Quoi is great for adding a touch of fuss-free colour, and YSL Volupté Tint-in-Balm (launching on 5 January) is good for those who need more colour.
6. Balance a washed-out face
If your face looks a bit washed-out without makeup, it’s because the cumulated lack of sleep is casting a grey undertone in your skin. To combat this, use a colour corrector to remove the grey cast – take note to apply it before your foundation, and only on focus points (the V-shape undereye area undereye, temples, above and below your lips) instead of over the whole face.
You can try using Make Up For Ever’s Step 1 Skin Equalizer in 6 Pink (great for fair skin), 9 Yellow (great for light skin), 8 Peach (for very grey cast light skin or medium-tan skin), or 10 Caramel (great for tanned skin).
If you tend to look tired by midday, apply slight touch-ups throughout the day with the YSL Beauty Touche Eclat Neutralisers in Violet and Bisque, which bring radiance back to the skin. Just dab and blend on the higher planes on the face to bring clarity and radiance to face.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
May these tips replace the 'C' in your #Chui face with an 'S' to become #Shui (terms used are in Hokkien: Chui = Tired and Shui = Beautiful).
