The Royal Beauty Rules Kate Middleton Must Follow

No exceptions.

We're sure it comes as no surprise to learn that being a royal — especially a British one — comes with a complicated set of protocols. Don't eat when the Queen's not eating, no tiaras before 6pm, no shellfish for dinner, and definitely no hemlines shorter than three inches above the knee.

Ouch. Still dream of marrying that hot prince?

Kate Middleton — now the Duchess of Cambridge and future Queen of England—knows this all too well. Since marrying Prince William in 2011, Kate has been at the forefront of royal-watchers' eyes, with her every move, outfit and expression coming under close scrutiny.

So it's no surprise that Kate likes to stick to a rigid set of rules when it comes to beauty, to make sure she's always looking her best.

Here, 6 beauty rules Kate never, ever breaks.

1. One must always be put-together

Whenever Kate steps outside her palace-door, be it to go to an event with hundreds of photographers or to take her kids to the park, people are hounding her for photos. Because of this, Kate always makes sure she never looks unkempt. She has her famous hair blow-dried three times a week, she rarely goes without makeup, and she has assistants and helpers to make sure she's never windblown or sunburnt.

2. One must never wear bright nail polish

Have you ever seen Kate rocking a super bright mani, or long nails? Neither have we. According to legend, the Queen hates bright nail polish, so all the royal ladies avoid it. Kate always keeps her nails short and clean, and wears a very light wash of colour overtop — she's a fan of Essie's 'Ballet Slippers.'

3. Thou beauty look must be long-lasting

Even though we usually just see a snap or two, Kate is sometimes at these events for hours and hours at a time. This means that she has to look perfectly poised the entire time. Kate's beauty team has a whole host of tricks and tips up their sleeves for long-lasting wear, including wrapping up her up-dos in a very fine hairnet to keep them from unravelling, using a primer and setting spray for her makeup (as well as on-site blotting papers), and wearing long-lasting perfumes.

4. One must never wear bright lipstick

There are a heap of hidden pitfalls associated with wearing bright, bold lipstick. It could get on your teeth, it's difficult to eat and drink, you have to reapply, it can make your makeup look harsh… the list goes on. It's for these reasons that Kate rarely — if ever — wears bright lipstick. Better safe than sorry.

5. Thou shalt not have grey hairs

If you cared to investigate, you might have noticed there are sometimes Kate has stepped out with a few stray grey hairs. Although this is totally normal and not strictly against any 'rules,' Kate has a preference for keeping her glossy hair always coloured. A regular appointment with her colourist and constant upkeep means you rarely see her mahogany hair anything less than perfect.

6. Thou shalt not wear heavy makeup

On a few different occasions, Kate has been spotted sporting a smoky eye, but that's about as heavy as her makeup goes. Avoiding dark contouring, bold lips, big false lashes, dark eye makeup and over-shiny highlight means that Kate always looks natural.
