ELLE Korea received an invitation from the SK-II team to visit Tokyo in May 2018. Arriving in a familiar burgundy envelope, the invitation read “We’ve nominated Chloe Grace Moretz as our new Global Ambassador. We invite you for a private chat with Chloe to talk about the #BareSkinProject, the concept of ‘healthy beauty’ and the evolution in the role of women”.
When ELLE Korea received this invitation, teams from ELLE China, Singapore and more contacted us, hoping to also get the opportunity to speak to Chloe, someone who embodies the SK-II philosophy of holistic beauty, allowing both your inner and outer beauty to shine through your values and a healthy lifestyle. It was also an opportunity of a lifetime to get to see her facing the press bravely without any makeup, thanks to the #BareSkinProject! With our goal in sight, the team set out for Tokyo.
We met her in a gorgeous hotel suite room, with the sunlight streaming through the bay windows. Dressed in a burgundy suit, Chloe was waiting for us with just a smidge of makeup, a healthy glow, and a huge smile on her face. A 21-year old Hollywood actress star on the rise, she captivated the ELLE team with her cheer and charm.
What was the first thought that came to mind when you were appointed an ambassador of SK-II’s #BareSkinProject?
I thought it was an innovative campaign that is what the women of today are looking for. Of course, it was a concept that appealed to my personal beliefs as well. I have to admit it was a little nerve-wracking being in front of the camera with no makeup on, but I was also excited at being able to show everyone who I really am, at my most natural self.
“Beautiful skin, even without makeup, is a showcase of a mind and body in balance.”
You made your showbiz debut when you were only seven and applying makeup has probably been impossible to avoid ever since.
I’ve been in the spotlight from a very young age, and I’ve seen first-hand how society has changed in the way it views beauty. SK-II’s #BareSkinProject champions the idea of celebrating the natural beauty of modern women, and this is something I’m very proud to be a part of.
SK-II, like ELLE, has always been an advocate of strong, independent women – something you have always spoken out for too. What mindset do you think such a woman should have?
Self-confidence is the first thing that comes to mind. Don’t be held back by what the world says you need to be or use makeup to hide who you truly are. Take care of your mental health – this is where I find meditation, yoga and exercise very helpful. A healthy mind helps you maintain a positive outlook on life.
That’s absolutely right. After all, beauty even without makeup is evidence of a healthy body
and mind. So what’s your secret to achieving this balance in life?
I believe in simplicity. Get enough sleep, drink loads of water, cutting down on my coffee intake… these are simple but essential rules to live by. This applies to my skincare routine too – I make sure my skin is cleansed well, apply Facial Treatment Essence, and that’s it.
Describe yourself in one word.
Hmm… doing it in just one word is difficult but… I think I’m a very patient and steadfast person. This comes across most obviously from how I focus on and study my favourite movies.
How would your closest friends describe you?
They’d probably say that I’m a very loyal friend. My friends and family, my relationships with the people that I love, are probably the most important things in my life.
Do you have a secret talent that nobody knows about?
I’m a poet! I’ve been writing poems every night since I was 14.
What’s your favourite way to spend some “me time”?
Like I mentioned earlier, mental health is very important so I do a lot of yoga and meditation to keep my mind clear of distractions and complications. This helps me focus on who I am and the goals I have for myself.
You were named as one of the “Most Influential Teens” by Time in 2014 and have been a strong influence on the millennial generation since then. Have you felt pressured by this responsibility? Pressure?
Not really. But I do feel a sense of responsibility. Anyone can be an influence these days, just by sharing thoughts and opinions on social media – you don’t even have to be someone famous. That’s why I feel sharing “conscious ideas” – personal thoughts that you truly believe in – on social media is very important. Personally, I try to share uplifting and inspirational thoughts with young women and sexual minorities on my social media accounts.
Since you’ve brought it up, let’s talk about the Facial Treatment Essence. What were your thoughts when you first started using it? Did its unique scent turn you off?
Not at all. It does have a unique fragrance but I didn’t have a problem with it. I’m quite particular about what goes into the makeup and skincare products that I use, and I love how the Facial Treatment Essence has simple ingredients that are not harmful to the body in any way. It doesn’t have any chemicals that have names that are impossible to pronounce. That’s why I don’t mind the scent – because it comes from Pitera™, Facial Treatment Essence being a natural product. It’s also great for the skin. I love how just using this water-type essence is enough to transform my skin – this simplicity is just perfect for me.
What’s the biggest change your skin has experienced since using Facial Treatment Essence?
It’s not just me – my older brother Trevor has been using it too, and we’ve both found that our skin has become brighter. Our skin tends to flush easily, and it gets worse when we are tired or don’t get enough rest. Facial Treatment Essence has improved that, so it’s great to wake up to clearer, brighter skin in the morning.
That’s probably why your skin looks so great today, even after the long flight from the US to Tokyo.
Yes, Facial Treatment Essence has really stabilised and improved the condition of my skin. But sleep and being hydrated play an important role in good skin – I do my best to stick to a regular sleep schedule and take melatonin to help with that too.
Are you confident of your “naked face”?
I’ve become more confident of going without makeup as I’ve grown older and matured. But I know that I have to take exceptional care of my skin and complexion in order to achieve this confidence. This doesn’t just apply to me – I want all women to remember that they can be confident and beautiful even without makeup.
