It’s all about vibrant hues this summer, and what better way to add a pop of colour to your outfit than with nail art? Ahead, six ideas that are surprisingly easy to do yourself.
You’ll need: A drinking straw to add a splash of pollock.
The technique: Apply a base colour, then choose two to three other splatter colours. Dip the straw into some polish and blow it onto each nail. Repeat with the other colours.
You’ll need: A piece of cellophane paper.
The technique: A metallic base will work well with this look. Our go-to: Gold – the easiest way to create 24 karat nails. Allow your base colour to dry before applying gold polish on top. Before the gold varnish dries, dip a small wad of crumpled cellophane in a vibrant hue and press it onto your nail for a splotched effect.
You’ll need: Coloured paper circles, made with a hole punch.
The technique: Paint nails in metallic gold or silver. While the polish is still wet, use tweezers to lay the paper circles in different patterns. After you’re done, finish with a top coat.
You’ll need: A clean makeup sponge and some sticky tape.
The technique: Use white nail polish to mix varying shades of your favourite hue. Tape your nails to create horizontal and vertical stripes. Then, with the makeup sponge, pick up the different shades of nail polish and pat it over your taped nails to create an ombre effect.
You’ll need: An eyebrow brush.
The technique: Start with a layer of clear polish on nails. Then, dip the eyebrow brush into white polish and make simple strokes over the nails. It’s as simple as that.
You’ll need: A makeup fan brush that makes arty stripes in a snap.
The technique: Paint your nails with your chosen base colour. After that dries, paint half the nail in a complementary shade. Next, sweep the fan brush over the wet polish to create a smart yet simple pattern.
