For the most part, sleeping in makeup can accelerate the ageing process and/or lead to breakouts. However, that's not the worst of it. New research suggests that wearing mascara to bed could have another very serious side effect: It could send you blind.
As pointed out by The Cut, a study published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that a 50-year-old Australian woman very nearly went blind after complications brought on by 25 years' worth of improperly removed mascara.
The woman turned up at her GP's office complaining of pain and irritation in both eyes. When they examined under her eyelids, doctors found solid masses comprised of years old mascara. The discomfort she was experiencing? That was the concretions rubbing up against (and eroding) the patient's conjunctival surface.
While experts were able to remove the multitude of small black masses, an infection could have permanently affected her vision. Yikes!
