We all tend to follow a routine when it comes to makeup. But while it helps make the process easier, these habits can also entrench us in a makeup rut - where we feel so comfortable applying the same makeup strokes and colours every day, year after year, that we never try anything different, even when we become different people as we grow older.
Come on, girls, change is the only constant in life. And it’s the same with makeup. You’ve got to keep up or risk looking outdated - or worse, boring!
Ahead, an age-appropriate guide to shake up your makeup game.
In your 20s
You need: Concealer to hide blemishes and pink blusher to enhance that youthful flush. Also, full (vis a vis overplucked, overarched) brows because they help you look as youthful as you are.
You should try: Definitely have fun with makeup colours and trends. Coloured eyeliner? Goth lipstick? Neon eyeshadow? Pastel hues? Go for it all - but of course not at the same time. You still need to keep things tasteful.
In your 30s
You need: Cushion foundation. Thanks to its dewy, luminous finish, this will make your complexion look younger than powder foundations.
You should try: Brighter lip colours to perk up your look.
In your 40s
You need: You probably already know exactly what works for you makeup-wise. A simple bold lip or an eyeliner-and-mascara combo is your go-to look. But you should also use a weightless fluid or serum foundation. These babies will help to brighten, even out and even smooth the skin to make you look younger.
You should try: A little experimenting with subtle trends won’t hurt. How about a fun negative-space mani, or some subtle highlighting and contouring?
