Homegrown Beauty: Coat

Caryn Lim, co-founder of Singapore's first organic nail polish brand, talks #coloursthatcare

What inspired you to create Coat?

When I started Hands + Feet Studio, I found that there was a demand for organic nail polish among my customers. I also noticed that while numerous foreign brands had many colours but few suited the Asian skin tone. So I decided to come up with a range of nail lacquer, which was organic, non-toxic and especially suitable for Asians.

What challenges do you face in creating nail colours?

One of the main challenges would be that we have to come up with trendy colours while taking into consideration if they are wearable for most skin tones.

We launch two main collections in a year of at least six colours. These two collections are based on the fashion trends and seasons. And we have limited-edition launches at least once a year, based on occasions around Asia. For example, in February we launched our Chinese New Year colours in orange and gold, and for August, we have SG50 colours to celebrate Singapore's birthday in red and white shades, of course.

How proud are you that Coat is Singaporean-owned?

I couldn’t be more proud to call Coat the producer of Singapore's first 5-Free nail lacquer (which means the formulas don’t contain formaldehyde, resin, camphor, toluene and dibutyl phthalate). I think increasingly Singapore is earning herself credibility in the products or services thatare invented here. Coat was definitely born out of a need and demand for beauty products that combine beauty and wellbeing for Singaporeans.

What does Singapore beauty mean to you?

It means embracing our own unique features and knowing what looks good on us and what is good for us.

Where are your fave places in Singapore to go for a pampering beauty treat?

I visit Vincent at Kenaris salon at Wheelock. He has been my go-to hairstylist for the longest time. Not only does he cut and colour my hair, he also shares tips with me on how to manage my hair well on a daily basis without the help of a professional. For foot massages and manicures, of course I go to Hands + Feet Studio (a nail salon that Lim owns as well).
