5 Things To Know Before You Go Under The Knife

You don’t want to be the next Botched star, do you?

Aesthetic procedures are by no means uncommon these days. Yet, plenty of people who go for them aren’t fully prepared in terms of what to expect or what questions to ask at the pre-consultation. Here are five basics to get familiar with if you’re planning to go under the knife.

1. Double-check your doc

Ensure that he or she is properly accredited, trained and experienced in the services you seek. Look out for qualifications, board certifications and specific background training. Also ensure that he’s had sufficient experience performing such procedures.

2. Find out who will be performing the procedure

Many aesthetic procedures require specialised training, so check who exactly will be administering the treatment, especially if a “therapist” might take over at some point.

3. Pick a doc you’re comfortable with

He or she should be someone who will take the time to answer all your questions and make you feel confident about the procedure. Getting referrals from family and friends will also help you narrow down your search.

4. Cheap is not always good

Headed overseas for a cheaper alternative? Know that botched jobs aren’t uncommon, says Gladys Cheng, founder of Skin M.D., a leading distributor of aesthetic equipment. Do thorough research on the skills of the doctor, as well as the quality of the devices and products, before committing.

5. Prep for before and after

Before you book an overseas treatment, know that the language barrier may inhibit you from communicating clearly with your doctor, so you may end up getting a very different result, says Dr Calvin Chan, medical director of Calvin Chan Aesthetics & Laser. Try bringing pictures of your ideal results, and ensure you’re on the same page as your doctor before proceeding.

Also, post-surgery complications may be expected with any surgical procedure, says Dr Chan. Have a standby doctor in Singapore who can help you minimise any negative after-effects.
