Scheduled to debut on 15 July, Stranger Things is an original Netflix series set in 1983 about the disappearance of a young boy and the strange happenings that ensue in a small Midwestern town. The eight-episode supernatural series stars ‘90s icon Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, the mother of the missing boy.
Below, 3 reasons why you should watch the show, and an ELLE exclusive preview of the trailer for Stranger Things!
1: Winona Ryder plays a frumpy mum
The actress portrays an unglamorous divorcee in Stranger Things, and even requested for her hairstyle to be modelled after Meryl Streep’s hair in Silkwood. From what we see in the trailer, her wardrobe is mostly made up of corduroy jackets and oversized sweaters – a far cry from Ryder’s real-life role as a Marc Jacobs muse and campaign face.
2: The show is a tribute to ‘80s cult classics
Described to be a “love letter to the ubiquitous cult classics of the ‘80s”, Stranger Things has a dark, haunting slow-burn appeal that is inspired by shows like ET and Close Encounters. To create an even more convincing retro atmosphere, the show also uses props like a rotary phone (“I’ve never seen that before,” says an intern).
3: It makes our hair stand
Fans of scary shows, meet your new obsession. The official synopsis goes: “As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.”
We’ve got serious goosebumps from just watching the trailer – and we expect the series to be much spookier.
