Warner Bros has announced that filming for Ocean’s Eight, a female-driven spinoff of the popular heist comedy Ocean’s trilogy will start in October. This comes hot on the heels of two other gender-reversed blockbusters: the recent release of the all-female Ghostbusters (which sadly was a box office flop) and news of Channing Tatum playing the mermaid in a Splash remake.
So far, the cast reads like a dream dinner party guest list: Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock are confirmed, and deals are reportedly close with Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina.
The movie will be directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games and Seabiscuit) and produced by Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh. Even though it has been reported that the movie will likely take place in a fashion-world setting (like a heist at the Met Gala!), Ross has declared that it won’t be a major departure from the previous films.
We’re all for the all-female cast, but can we have cameos from George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon pleeease? We’re also hoping that Julia Roberts will somehow rehash her character for this installment as well. “We can’t wait” is a major understatement for this one.
