One last week to Chinese New Year - are you almost done with the spring-cleaning? You might think you’ve covered every nook and cranny of your home...but have you? Here are four oft-used but commonly neglected things that you should scrub NOW.
We use this to store the food that we eat, yet it’s one appliance that many of us hardly ever clean. If you frequently store highly perishable foods such as leftovers from meals in your fridge, a general wipe-down of the shelves with a wet cloth once a week is necessary.
On top of that, a thorough cleaning should be scheduled once every three months. This means taking out and sorting through all items, discarding things that have expired or are unlikely to be used, then wiping down the interior with a mixture of dishwashing detergent and water. Remember, don’t shut the fridge door immediately - wait till the interior is completely dry before loading your items back in.
If odours linger in the fridge even after a cleaning, trying placing a cup of baking soda in it. Charcoal deodorisers, which you can find in supermarkets, are also pretty effective in eliminating the pong.
Why does an appliance that cleans require cleaning? If you haven’t noticed, some washing machines tend to hold water in certain components due to their design, making them a breeding ground for germs and mildew. It doesn’t help that our humid weather contributes to the problem.
To clean the drum, run an empty load with hot water and three cups of white vinegar thrown into it. After that, don’t forget to give the exterior a wipe with water and soap.
Vacuum (using the upholstery brush attachment) your mattress once every six months to remove dust and pathogens. And while you’re at it, flip it over to help retain its shape and support.
If you’ve invested in expensive shower fittings, make sure you give them the care they need. Once a year, soak your shower heads in a tub filled with enough white vinegar to submerge the surface where the water jets are located. This removes mineral deposits as well as bacteria.
