The maison Bischoff in the quiet mountain town of St Gallen in Switzerland has for centuries been known for its embroidery, which it these days supplies to the biggest names in haute couture and luxury lingerie – think hallowed houses like Chanel, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.
But this year, its famed needlework found a surprising new client in Hublot when the Swiss watchmaker launched an innovative timepiece, the Big Bang Broderie Sugar Skull.
As its name suggests, the 41mm watch - modelled by Bar Refaeli in the campaign ads - is a take on the brand’s signature Big Bang style, with a stunning twist: Both the dial and the strap feature Bischoff’s intricate embroidery on tulle and denim in an explosion of colours shot through with Lurex threads. The inspiration? 2016’s runways.
The embroidered fabrics are first encased and moulded like a stack of sheets in carbon, then fused with other, more traditional elements (like ceramic and jewels) to produce an accessory that’s part street, part sophisticated – and altogether glorious.
According to Hublot, the Big Bang Broderie Sugar Skull “has taken the craft away from haute couture, fashion and lingerie, so as to free embroidery from the fixed notions and traditional ideas that held it”.
We love that idea, don’t you? Now to put in a sugar-coated request to Santa for one this year…
