Designer musical chairs went full circle at Oscar de la Renta recently, with Monse designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia announced as the new co-creative directors of the luxury label.
The duo is definitely not new to the game, as they spent a combined 18 years working at the American design giant. Kim worked at Oscar de la Renta from 2003 to 2015, eventually becoming design director under de la Renta, while Garcia joined in 2009 as a fashion assistant.
The pair will take the place of Peter Copping, the former Nina Ricci designer who stepped down as creative director of Oscar de la Renta in July.
Kim and Garcia have plans to run Monse and Oscar de la Renta simultaneously – the former being a one-year-old brand that the pair founded. Already a cult hit among fashion tastemakers like Amal Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker, Monse is known for its unconventional tailoring and easy wearability.
We’re looking forward to seeing the pair combine their commercial and celebrity sensibility with the couture-like aesthetics of the well-loved New York label, though it might be quite a wait – Oscar de la Renta’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection will be designed by a studio team.
