As I was browsing the Fall 2016 runway pictures, it struck me that the season’s hit bags are a clever, luxurious iteration of basic bag styles that we’re accustomed to.
The Balenciaga striped tote, for example, reminds me of the ubiquitous blue, white and red striped zip plastic bags that we use to stuff our Bangkok shopping hauls after an overenthusiastic spree at Chatuchak. Of course, the French label’s version is much more chic – crafted in leather and boasting bold blue, white and black stripes for a graphic impact.
Another example of #BasicBagsUpgraded can be spotted at Gucci. The luxury fashion house partnered with Brooklyn artist Trevor Andrew aka GucciGhost to tag its premium accessories with the latter’s iconic graffiti letters. The shopper bag, in particular, shares the shape of a regular paper bag, except it’s made from full leather, and has the word “REAL” in graffiti-style dripping across it. Madonna has already been spotted carrying it, so it’s safe to predict that the street style stars will be all over it this season.
The holographic satchel at the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2016 presentation is reminiscent of foil wrappers – and a suitably street-cool nod to the prevailing ‘90s-inspired fashion trend. Sophisticated accents like the label’s iconic padlock, and an accompanying leather sling gives this accessory the ultimate high/low mix. Just make sure to pair with matching nails.
