She’s the queen of prints and he the prince, so it was perhaps only a matter of time that the two of them got together. The official word came a few hours ago, when Diane Von Furstenberg announced that she would be hiring Jonathan Saunders as chief creative officer of her brand, effective immediately.

According to von Furstenberg, the courtship was a whirlwind one, with the pair’s first meeting happening barely three weeks ago, WWD reported.
Speaking to the fashion trade publication, the American design veteran said: “I was impressed with [Saunders] from the very first collection… I’ve been watching him since and went to a couple of his shows. His sense of colours and prints is just amazing. By the time we met, it was as if we always knew each other. He came and did a little consulting, and we fell in love. Less than three weeks later, we’re married.”
“It’s a decision we all made very quickly because it’s so natural,” added Saunders, the award-winning Glasgow-born, London-based wunderkind who’s won numerous awards for his distinctive, offbeat graphical looks. He launched his eponymous label in 2003 and closed it in December last year for personal reasons.

This is the first time DVF has created such a position and hired a single designer across all categories – something that von Furstenberg felt was necessary for the brand to evolve. “I think it’s time for me to have a young [designer], and not to try to pretend I’m not young anymore,” the driving force behind the DVF empire told WWD. She will continue to be chairwoman of her company.
In her official statement, she added: “Jonathan’s extraordinary passion for colours and prints, his effortless designs, and his desire to make women feel beautiful make him the perfect creative force to lead DVF into the future.
“I could not have found a cooler, more intelligent designer and I cannot wait to watch him shine as our chief creative officer.”
