Behind every great wardrobe is an amazing lingerie drawer. So why is it that most of us only have a handful of bras at a time that we wear until they fall apart?
Here’s how important a well-fitting bra is: They greatly affect the way clothes look on your body and help negate the effects of ageing and gravity (a.k.a. sagging) in the long run. Think it’s about time you invested in a few good pairs of bras for your breast friends? Discover the 7 most fundamental bra types you and your girls need now.
1. The t-shirt bra
Naturally Invisible Zero Cotton bra, $84.90, by Sloggi.
Comfortable and simple, this is one bra every girl should have in their wardrobe. T-shirt bras are traditionally made with smooth, slightly padded cups to hide creases or nipples under every day outfits. Most have an underwire for support, but with new technology, you can even find seamless options that will make you feel like you’re wearing next to nothing.
For a start, get one in your skin colour (to be worn under slightly sheer shirts) and another in black that will go with just about everything. Have a larger bra size? Choose a t-shirt bra with a full cup for greater comfort.
Shop Sloggi at #B3-08 Ion Orchard.
2. The balconette
Merveille balconette bra, price unavailable, by La Perla.
These vintage numbers are as functional as they as sexy. Balconette bras only cover half the breast so you can wear low-cut tops with ease, and have an underwire to give your girls a slight push for subtle cleavage. There are tons of different designs, from printed to lacy, to suit your every mood.
Women with fuller breast have to be careful while shopping for these though. Due to its shape, it’s easy for larger breasts to bulge over the top of the cup, resulting in the dreaded ‘double boob’. Be sure to find a fit that doesn’t cut into your breast and go up a cup-size if you have to.
Shop La Perla at #01-35/36 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
3. An amazing sports bra
All Sport bra, HK$520 (approx. S$93.16), by Lululemon.
A great sports bra is one of the most important pieces of lingerie you need in your closet, especially if you spend more time in gym wear than regular clothes. Before you head out to shop for a sports bra, there are two things to consider: What is your body type? And what activities will you be doing in the bra?
Compression bras — the most common sports bra out there — work well for women with smaller busts. Those with a bigger cup size, however, should turn to encapsulated bras, which provide greater support by compressing each breast individually. If you’re going to be doing vigorous sports, opt for the adjustable encapsulated bra, which has a wider, adjustable band and straps so you can customise the fit.
Shop Lululemon at #B1-11 Ion Orchard.
4. A strapless bra
Satin and mesh plunge bra, US$101 (approx. S$140.70), by Cosabella from Net-a-Porter.
Nope, just removing the straps off your regular bras does not always cut it. Without the added support from straps, it’s imperative to find a strapless bra that won’t slip off or cause sagging.
When choosing the perfect strapless bra, go a size down and a size up on the band and cup respectively so it fits snug against your body. For those with larger busts, gravitate towards bras with a silicone or rubber band on the inseam, a thicker band or a bodice that looks like a corset for the best fit.

5. The stick-on bra
Go Bare self-adhesive backless strapless bra, US$36 (approx. S$50.15), by Fashion Forms from Net-a-Porter.
Backs are the new butts in 2016, so there’s no better time to invest in a good silicon stick-on bra so you can confidently wear backless outfits. Girls with smaller busts can get away with almost any kind sold on the market — just be sure to check its adhesiveness before purchasing. There are also pairs with regular cups and under-wiring to give those with bigger breasts more lift and support.

6. The push-up bra
Crystal lace triangle push-up bra, price unavailable, by Etam.
For va-va-voom cleavage, there’s no better bra style to count on than the trusty ol’ push-up bra. Contrary to popular belief, busty girls can totally rock a push-up too. Just be sure to pick something with less padding and has a lifting effect instead of enlarging to keep your chest from looking unnaturally large. With a variety of push-up bras with padding in different areas, they can also help enhance the shape and look of different breast types.
Shop Etam at #01-31/32 Wisma Atria.
7. The fun bra
Loren strappy bralette, $134.40, by For Love and Lemon from Revolve.
This is the kind of lingerie you want people to see. Think lacy bralettes and edgy pairs with harnesses that can be worn under really translucent or revealing tops. Go wild — there’s no formula for this! Have fun and go for something that makes you feel sexy.
