Ah, there’s nothing like an island vacation to relax and calm the mind.
Now, besides the obvious locales like Bintan, Bali and Phuket, here’s a tropical island you should head to for more than the usual fun in the sun — Providenciales.
Also known as Provo, the deep blue seas and white sand beaches on the Turks and Caicos island are reasons enough to make us want to hop on a plane right now. But for those who love dogs (like us), there’s a very special reason to head down: You can spend your time playing with rescue puppies on the beach.
As part of a rehoming initiative by the island’s local non-profit organisation Potcake Place, you can take a pup under their care for puppy beach socialisation walks.
Potcake Place, as its name suggests, has made it its mission to reduce the number of homeless potcake dogs, a mix-breed pup that’s commonly found on the Caribbean islands. While they’re friendly, loyal and intelligent, their numbers have risen over the years. Plus, with no animal shelters in place to keep them safe, they risk starvation, accidents, diseases and even euthanisation. Potcake Place’s volunteers and helpers have therefore taken any strays they find into their own homes until they find the right adoptive parents.
By letting (responsible, caring) people take the dogs out for walks on the beach, the potcakes get the love and affection they need and learn how to socialise, improving their general mental and physical health and increasing their chances of getting adopted. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that many holiday-goers have also left the islands with a new family member.
However, we’re not saying you should travel all the way to the Turks and Caicos islands to adopt a pet. There are plenty of strays waiting to be given a new home here in Singapore, from animal protection non-profits like the SPCA, Save Our Street Dogs Singapore, Action For Singapore Dogs and much more. But being able to provide love for and play with a homeless dog while on vacation is definitely the cherry on top of the holiday cake.
