5 Enjoyable Ways To Boost Heart Health

It’s World Heart Day - time to learn how you can keep yours healthy

Every day, 15 people die from cardiovascular disease in Singapore. Heart disease and stroke accounted for 29.9 per cent of all deaths in 2014. That’s a sure sign that we need to show our hearts some love - and there’s no better time than today, which happens to be World Heart Day.

1. Eat healthy

For foodies, the first rule of heart health is also the most difficult to follow. By all means allow yourself the occasional indulgence, but make it a point to eat well the rest of the time. Load up on fruits, veggies, grains, nuts and fish (especially salmon, tuna and mackerel) — fibre and omega-3 fatty acids all benefit the heart, and who says they can’t be yummy?

2. Don’t avoid alcohol

Surprise - moderate consumption of alcohol is actually good for the heart. One glass a day can raise HDL levels and help you relax, which is good for blood pressure. FYI we’re referring to red wine, which contains resveratrol and antioxidants that boast cancer-fighting benefits and keep your ticker in better shape.

3. Walk more

Exercise in any form is sure to boost heart health, but the easiest way you can incorporate a workout into daily life is to simply get up and work those legs. Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator on days when you are giving your skyscraper heels a rest.

4. Sleep better

Sleep is linked to every facet of your health — not enough of it can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and even obesity. Cut down on late nights and caffeine intake throughout the day.

5. Take a holiday

Studies have shown that taking regular breaks from work can reduce the risk of heart disease by 30 per cent. Now that’s a great reason to start planning a vacay!
