Music can really up the feel-good ante, but which tracks do it best? Dutch neuroscientist Jacob Jolij has come up with a definitive list of tunes after studying pop songs from the last 50 years, before carrying out a survey asking participants about their music preferences and what songs improve their mood.

He then analysed the results based on factors such as lyrics, tempo and year of release before coming up with a Feel Good Index. Here are the Top 10 songs that are guaranteed (well, almost) to make your smile.

1. Don't Stop Me Now (Queen, 1979)

2. Dancing Queen (Abba, 1976)

3. Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys, 1966)

4. Uptown Girl (Billie Joel, 1983)

5. Eye of the Tiger (Survivor, 1982)

6. I'm a Believer (The Monkees, 1966)

7. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper, 1985)

8. Livin' on a Prayer (Bon Jovi, 1986)

9. I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor, 1979)

10. Walking on Sunshine (Katrina & The Waves, 1983)

On top of determining the 10 most popular tracks, Dr Jolij also analysed the top feel-good songs from the last six decades. And here they are:

2010s Happy (Pharrell Williams)

2000s Dancing in the Moonlight (Toploader)

1990s Let Me Entertain You (Robbie Williams)

1980s Uptown Girl (Billy Joel)

1970s Don't Stop Me Now (Queen)

1960s Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys)
