Remembering Alan Rickman

Goodbye, Professor Snape

Even as tributes to David Bowie continue to flood our Facebook feeds, news of another star’s passing is joining them: That of Alan Rickman.

Last night, Rickman - one of British film’s most well-loved actors - died in London following a battle with cancer.

The 69-year-old was perhaps best known for being Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies, but his body of work includes brilliant roles such as the villian Hans Gruber in Die Hard, The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Harry (opposite Emma Thompson) in Love Actually. He also starred in the In Demand music video for Scottish band Texas.

We bid him farewell with a collection of heartfelt tributes from his friends - the people who knew him best.

“There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.” - JK Rowling

“Everybody loved Alan. He was always happy and fun and creative and very, very funny.” - Michael Gambon (Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies)

What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom, and kindness. His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. He was the ultimate ally. In life, art and politics. He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being and we shall not see his like again. - Emma Thompson

What desperately sad news about Alan Rickman. A man of such talent, wicked charm & stunning screen & stage presence. He'll be sorely missed. - Stephen Fry

“I’m very sad to hear about Alan today. I feel so lucky to have worked and spent time with such a special man and actor. I'll really miss our conversations. RIP Alan. We love you.” - Emma Watson

An exceptionally warm and giving man and an utterly phenomenal actor and gifted director. And that voice! Oh, that voice … We are all so devastated to lose Alan.” - Kate Winslet

Behind his starry insouciance and careless elegance, behind that mournful face, which was just as beautiful when wracked with mirth, there was a super-active spirit, questing and achieving, a superhero, unassuming but deadly effective. - Ian McKellen
