The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a sleek, strong beauty – a legend even among Rolexes – essentially created for one crucial function. This timepiece expresses time in the clearest, most accurate way possible, a duty that it has carried out flawlessly since the first Oyster was created in 1926.
The Oyster was the world’s first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch. Today, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual remains a popular classic in the brand’s stable. Available in sizes ranging from the dainty 26mm to the sportier 39mm, this collection features the renowned Rolex Oyster case that is waterproof up to a depth of 100m, and employs Rolex’s ingenious self-winding Perpetual rotor, which ensures continuous winding of the mainspring by harnessing the energy generated by wrist motion.
In 1931, Rolex played a pioneering role when it developed a self-winding system for a wristwatch, which it patented as the Perpetual rotor. To this day, the rotor is incorporated into the watch’s mechanical movement and its globally renowned status is testament to its precision and reliability.
One of three movements is employed in each Oyster Perpetual in this particular collection, depending on the size. The calibre 3132 equips the 39mm version; the calibre 3130 the 36mm and 34mm versions; and the calibre 2231 the 31mm and 26mm versions.
These movements are entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, and each is a certified Swiss chronometer that has passed the rigorous standards of the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
Additionally, the calibres 3132 and 3130 are fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring patented and made by Rolex using an exclusive alloy that offers great stability amid temperature variations. It is also up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks.
At the true heart of each Oyster Perpetual, meanwhile, is an oscillator with a balance wheel regulated to extreme precision with gold Microstella nuts. The oscillator is held firmly in place by a traversing balance bridge, further reinforcing shock resistance. The balance bridge features an optimised height-adjustment system and new integrated protection for the balance wheel.
On the outside, the middle case is hewn from a solid block of highly corrosion-resistant 904L steel. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool exclusive to Rolex watchmakers, while the brand’s distinctive winding crown, fitted with the Twinlock double waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case.
Staying true to its purpose, virtually scratch-proof sapphire crystal armours the face to ensure a clear display of time.
The finishing touch is a seamless solid-link bracelet with an Oysterclasp in the same hardy 904L steel, rendering a very secure and comfortable fit – complementing all Rolex Oyster Perpetual models.
