This Is The First Swatch Designed By A Singaporean

Juliana Ong scores one for local artists

The Swatch Art Peace Hotel Special watches have always been highly popular collectors’ items – they are limited-edition collaboration pieces with the Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, a unique concept property that combines studios where artists live and work with artistically appointed lodgings. Every year, the work of a different artist is featured on this iconic watch series that has come to be known as a creative canvas for designers from all over the world.

This year, for the first time ever, the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Special has been designed by a Singaporean who is also an artist-in-residence of the hotel. Yi Lin Juliana Ong, who goes by “Juls”, studied art and design in London, and has had her artwork shown in museums and galleries in the UK and Singapore. In 2014, she applied and was accepted for a residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel.

Her Swatch piece, titled Juls At Swatch Art Peace Hotel, is covered with faces and figures inspired by the “comic faces found on Chinese artefacts”. Drawn in red and blue against a white background, they are part of a colourful, lively community that emerged from drawing exercises during her stay at the hotel. “It's all about the process, the adventures and those strange characters”, says Ong.

Strange or not, it sure is one eye-catching piece to add to your wardrobe of casual timepieces and show your support for a Singaporean artist. Grab yours for $103 at Swatch boutiques.
