It’s finally 2016! Before we gear up for a whole new year of crazy fashion trends, memorable runway moments and pieces to lust after, take some time to think about what you want to do differently — style-wise — in 2016. Haven’t got a clue? Well, here’s our list of six fashion resolutions to make for the new year that are totally achievable.
1. Go for quality instead of quantity
We all love inexpensive clothes (see our list of 27 Things You Can Buy For $10 Or Less) but if you’re constantly filling your closet with cheap pieces that fall apart or lose its shape after a few washes, it’s time to rethink how you shop. When it comes to wardrobe basics like a fitted blazer, comfy jeans and a little black dress, invest in good quality pieces that will last you a lifetime.
2. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
As much as we love it, fashion is, as a whole, a resource and waste-heavy industry. So the next time you’re clearing out your closet, instead of throwing out things you no longer wear, make an effort to recycle them instead. There are so many ways you can do so: Hand them down to a younger cousin, sell them off on Carousell or Ebay, or donate them to thrift stores like the Salvation Army and New2U.
3. Break fashion ‘rules’
Who said curvy babes should only stick to black, or that tall girls shouldn’t wear heels? This year, it’s time to stop putting yourself and your style in a box. Experiment and wear what you feel — what’s important is understanding what you think looks best on you and what makes you feel good. Fashion has always been about having fun anyway, right?
4. Shop consciously
Behind all the glitz and glamour that is fashion, is a whole arsenal of manufacturers, workers, and natural resources used to create each piece of clothing. Take the year to find out if your favourite brands are making their apparel according to ethical and environmental standards, and try out eco-conscious brands, including local labels like Zhai and Saught.
5. Learn how to care for your clothes
Quality plays a big part in how long your clothes will last, but much of it depends on how you take care of them as well. Read and follow washing instructions religiously, look for a dependable dry cleaner, and find out the proper way to store your clothes. It’s a lot of work, but trust us, your wardrobe will be better for it.
6. Take care of what’s inside
What you wear underneath your clothes is as (if not more) important as the actual clothes itself. Picking the right underwear and bras can instantly change how a dress or top looks on your body, so invest in quality lingerie to suit different outfits — from a t-shirt and jeans to a plunging V-neck dress. Also, your bra size will change according to any weight fluctuations, so get your bra size checked regularly.
