Ruffles can be intimidating to wear, not least because they’re usually associated with princess-y dresses we all wore when we were children — which just aren’t a good look when you’re an adult.

However, there is a way to bring out the femininity of frills while tamping down its girlishness. Take style cues from the Spring/Summer 2016 runways, where designers added flounces to strategic spots to give pieces subtle texture and drama.

Ruffles adorned romantic frocks in Alexander McQueen; gave off-shoulder pieces at Proenza Schouler and Jason Wu a little oomph; and made a Balmain leather skirt both badass and sweet.

Just as the designers have done it, the best way to add sophistication to ruffles is to keep them simple but architectural.

Instead of dreamy tulle and lace, opt for pieces with a more structured and exaggerated flounce, and balance it out with androgynous separates and accessories, such as boyfriend jeans or brogues.

Click through the gallery above to check out the best looks from the Spring/Summer 2016 runways, and the pieces to buy now!
