Local-gone-international label Ong Shunmugam is – finally! – opening a physical store after five years in the business. Next month, it will move from its basement atelier in Hong Leong Building at Raffles Place to a retail unit in Chip Bee Gardens.
Designer Priscilla Shunmugam says the decision was spurred by the fact that Hong Leong Building is set to undergo major renovations later this year. “No matter the digital economy, a physical retail store is still the most powerful manifestation of a brand’s story, products and experience,” she says. “Naturally, we’re deeply sentimental about our humble beginnings at Hong Leong. But sadness has transformed into an opportunity for us to come to terms with how much we’ve outgrown the space.”
The upcoming Ong Shunmugam flagship will take up a 1,300 sq ft space and open end July. More details to come.
