All The Juice From Givenchy’s SS16 NYFW Show

We tell you what happened at the highly-buzzed-about event — it’s like you were there

1. The show was radically inclusive but getting the invites wasn't easy

On top of invites for the usual fashion tribe (editors, buyers and celebrities), over 1,000 coveted spots were given to the public: 820 tickets were raffled off online, 280 were given to local fashion students and another 100 were set aside for locals. If you were lucky enough to snag tix, the only way to pick up the numbered, limited-edition prints (usual practice for Givenchy’s Parisian shows) was to trek to a tugboat off a pier.

2. Marina Abramović did a performance and installation

Creative director Riccardo Tisci calls her family, and she is one of the best-regarded artists of our time. Since the show fell on 11 September, Abramovic’s pre-show piece paid tribute to that fateful day, in a respectful performance that involved a ladder, a running faucet and a chanting monk — a highly emotional and stunning work with the sight of Freedom Tower at dusk as the backdrop of the show.

3. A Victoria’s Secret angel took a tumble

Model Candice Swanepoel missed her footing and fell while walking the runway. She was helped up by an audience member and laughed it off after readjusting her outfit. After the show, she Instagrammed a picture of her scratches with the caption: “Thank you to whoever picked me up off the runway tonight. Left with little scratches but mostly a bruised ego #ohwell”

4. Face jewellery? Of course

Elaborate face jewellery - stunning work by none other that Pat McGrath - was seen on a handful of models. We hear each face took seven hours to complete...which may explain why the rest of the girls wore barely-there makeup.

Meanwhile, the clothes? Perfection. A monochromatic essay on the boudoir and tuxedo, with spectacular gowns rich in embroidery and gothic lace finished in crystals and fur sent down the runway.

5. It was a perfect celebration of Tisci’s decade at Givenchy

Why NYC? “America was the first country to really believe in me. It’s a way of saying thank you to America for what it’s given to me,” explained Tisci. And everyone turned up to say thank you, too: Hollywood royalty (Julia Roberts, Uma Thurman, Amanda Seyfried, Margot Robbie, Hailee Steinfeld); musicians (Erykah Badu, Courtney Love, Steven and Liv Tyler, Jennifer Hudson and Ciara); fellow designers (Michael Kors, Alexander Wang and Joseph Altuzarra); reality-show stars (Kimye, Rachel Zoe); photographers (Mario Sorrenti, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Inez van Lamsweerde) and more.

This was possibly the most spectacular Spring/Summer 2016 show...and fashion week has barely started.
